What is a Jessner Peel?

The Jessner is considered  a medium-depth peel. This means it will only penetrate into the upper layer of the dermis. We normally classify peels on a scale of superficial to deep and the Jessner peel lies somewhere in the middle.

One of the main ingredients of Jessner Peel is salicylic acid that deeply penetrates the pores and removes congested sebum and dead skin cells. It also contains lactic acid which may improve hydration. This solution may be applied in layers to provide a variety of results. It can also be used in conjunction with microdermabrasion for a deeper penetration. The Jessner Peel solution self neutralises itself meaning that the solution has to be left on the skin for around 6-8 hours for it to take full effect. The peeling process may take several days.

Some other variations of Jessner Peels are on the market  may contain ingredients such as mandelic, azelaic, phytic and glycolic.

Benefits of a Jessner Peel

The Jessner Peel is designed to remove superficial layers of skin, dry out active acne, dislodge blackheads, reduce shallow wrinkling and scarring, help lighten hyper pigmentation and improve the overall appearance and health of sun-damaged, acne prone, aging skin. The Peel triggers an inflammatory response within the skin to heal itself. A Jessner peel is a fantastic and safe way to maintain your  skin. It improves the skins cell turnover leaving it looking brighter and younger.

Preparation for a Jessner Peel

It is important to avoid sun exposure for 2 weeks prior to your treatment. If you are using active skin care products containing retinoids and AHAs we also recommend you stop using them for 2 weeks before and a week after your treatment.

What to Expect During a Jessner Peel

Your skin is thoroughly cleansed. A microdermabrasion may be performed if required. The application of the Peel may only take a few minutes and gauzes are normally used for this application. The Peel is applied in layers and your Dermal Therpaist monitors your skin response for any frosting. Multiple layers may be applied depending on your skin’s response to the Peel.

Although this peel can be performed all year around, we recommend peels to be performed in cooler months avoiding the strong suns UV rays.

Potential Side Effects

Patients may experience redness, tightness, swelling and peeling after the application, which is normal and should last around five days. It is important to follow your pre and post care instructions.

This Peel is not suitable if  you are pregnant or if you are allergic to certain acids, as it contains a significant amount of salicylic acid.

Aftercare

It is import to refrain from the use of water or any oil-based products on your skin after the peel for at least 6-10 hours. Oil reverses or neutralises the action of the peel whilst water may push the solution deeper into the skin and cause the peel to re activate, making it stronger. We recommend to avoid extreme temperatures such as hot sauna, yoga and exercising for at least 24 hours. At this time only washing, hydration such as Vaseline or Bepanthen, and applying sunscreen are allowed. Around day three, the skin will tighten and start to peel. Please let the natural peeling process take place and do not pick on your skin.  Peeling is usually finished around day five. Your normal skin care routine with active ingredients will carefully be reintroduced to your skincare regimen.
