How does Botulinum Toxin work?

Botulinum Toxin is a neurotoxin that is derived from clostridium botulinum, a bacterium found in the intestines of fish and some land animals. It is also found in our natural environment. This toxin can cause a deadly illness called botulism, which causes muscle weakness that can lead to respiratory failure. Scientists found that a gram of Botulinum Toxin can kill more than one million people. However, medical experts also found that when used in small amount, it can be very effective in eliminating wrinkles and other facial lines.

When Botulinum Toxin type A is diluted with saline (a mixture of salt and water), it creates a solution that is beneficial to the facial muscles. Upon injecting directly into the face, the Botulinum Toxin blocks the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which sends electrical signals to the brain so that muscles can contract. The product starts to take effect from around three days onwards, the facial muscles will be temporarily paralyzed, thereby removing the wrinkles and creating a smooth skin, temporarily. After two weeks, the full result of this procedure will take effect and can last for three to four months.

Although the natural effect of Botulinum Toxin is not permanent, it can have a long term influence on the aging process of the facial skin. When Botulinum Toxin is applied twice or thrice a year, facial muscles will be less active and will, therefore, produce fewer wrinkles and lines. Long term relaxation of the muscles leads to a younger and smoother face, which is why this treatment is a very popular procedure amongst adults.

Botulinum Toxin also has many other medical applications besides its use for cosmetic purposes. It is proven to treat medical conditions like spasm of the eyelids, severe migraine, excessive sweating, neck and shoulder spasms, and an overactive bladder.

However, there are some minor side-effects that a person can feel after a Neuromodulator Injection Therapy Treatment. Some of these are mild nausea, flu-like illness, drooping eyelids, temporary weakness of some muscles, blurred vision, swelling and rashes.  In some instances, some people have reportedly developed antibodies against the Botulinum Toxin, which makes the following treatments unsuccessful.

Still, Botulinum Toxin is considered safe and very effective by the medical community when used correctly. In fact, Neuromodulator Injection Therapy Treatments have increased by more than 700% since 2000 and there were more than 7.6 million injections done just in 2015.
