What is PDT?
Is a topical therapy for pre-cancerous and skin cancer lesions such as actinic keratoses, basal cell carcinomas and Bowen’s disease. It can also treat Sun damaged skin, Rosacea, Acne, Large pores, Fine lines and wrinkles, Skin pigmentation and have an overall rejuvenating effect on ageing skin.
What is the application process?
It starts with a topical application of a cream called Arrunolevulinic Acid (ALA) which is a natural product found throughout our body. When it is applied to the skin it is quickly absorbed by the skin cells such as those in oil glands, hair follicles and sun damaged skin. A few hours later the client returns to the clinic and is put under a light source LED Light to activate the solution. Light sedation may be required to make the treatment for comfortable.
PDT uses light sources combined with a light-sensitive drug (sometimes called a photosensitizing agent) to destroy cancer cells. PDT is particularly suitable in areas where the cancer develops in skin directly overlying bone, such as Bowen’s disease on the shins and hands.
Usually only one treatment of PDT is needed, but occasionally 2–3 further treatments may be given if your skin cancer is thick.
What can I expect after the treatment?
The treated area of skin will be sensitive to daylight and bright, indoor lighting. This effect will probably last for about 24 hours. You will need to keep the treated area of skin covered during this time to avoid the skin becoming burnt. After that you can wash, bath or shower as usual, but you will still need to treat your skin gently and not rub the area until it has healed.
Healing
There is no risk of scarring with PDT. Temporary swelling and redness will occur with the lips and around the eyes for a few days. Darker pigmented patches and sun spots can become temporary darker then peel off leaving normal skin. This usually occurs up to seven to ten days.
It is important for the patient to avoid the sun where possible and wear adequate protection when in the sun.
How soon will I see results?
You can see improvements as little as 10 days post treatment. Your skin will continue to improve 8 to 12 weeks after treatment.
