Lips come in all different shapes and sizes. Some people are more blessed then others with their lip structure. As we age lip volume and hydration levels can diminish. Some people also have uneven lips. All these issues can be addressed with our Cosmetic Doctor.

Our Clients that see Lip enhancement candidates range from younger clients who are unhappy with their naturally thin lips to older patients experiencing a gradual thinning of the lips due to aging. Our younger patients may seek  more lip volume, may present a thin upper lip vermilion,  have a very small mouth, be asymmetrical lip sizes, or have a genetic deformity.

In our older,  patients, symptoms such as  thinning of the lips, loss of volume and formation of fine lines and wrinkles may be present. The  vermilion border may be disappearing  and lips may loose it’s  colour. Lips become dehydrated and begin to feel rough, dry and damaged.

What can cause thinning Lips

Patients with medical issues such as congenital disorders, atopic dermatitis (also known as eczema, or lip dermatitis), and psoriasis can influence your lip shape and ageing. Symptoms of such a medical conditions can  cause thin lips to scale and  crack. They can also become  itchy with  burning, pain and inflammation on the lip area.

Another cause is a pre-cancerous condition called a, sailor’s lip or farmer’s lip. The medical term is called Actinic cheilitis and usually affects the lower lip epithelium itself (the outermost external layer of tissue on the bottom lip), although in as many as 10% of cases it affects the top lip as well. The condition may not be dangerous. However, it can sometimes be an antecedent symptom of lip cancers like intraepidermal carcinoma, or invasive squamous cell carcinoma. Symptoms of actinic cheilitis include a loss of demarcation of the vermilion border, lesions, scaly papules, plaques, pale or yellow skin discolorations of the skin adjacent to the lip areas, ulcerations, crusting, and difficulty applying lip liners, lip gloss, and lipstick (the makeup will tend to bleed into prominent lip lines and folds surrounding the lip area).

Loss of Collagen therefore resulting in lax skin can also impact the presentation of our lips. The lips and also it’s surrounding skin tissue becomes droopy, saggy and wrinkly. Sun exposure can age the skin prematurely also.

Smoking doe not helps and can also age your lips earlier. The strong lines that develop on top of your lips are often referred to as smoker’s lines. Smoking can also be a responsible habit for breaking down collagen faster which is required to keep the skin looking more youthful.

Hormonal changes can also influence early thinning of the lips. Free radical, stress, sun exposure amongst other factors can influence how our skin ages. We recommend using SPF of at least 30 + and also lip balms with SPF to protect your skin. Also make sure your drink plenty of water to help hydrate the skin.
