What causes Scars

When we occur an injury to our body, blood vessels with clotting cells start sending infection fighting cells to the injured area. Healing  wounds will appear swollen and puffy. Any potential fluids from the injured area are a result from the natural healing process and you body wanting to heal itself. Scars are a result of healing process to the skin. Their appearance can vary and the outcome of a scar depends on factors such as type of injury, healing process and where the wound is located. We offer treatments to treat various types of scars. What are the main concerns related to scars

The size of your injury / wound and what casued it will determine what type of scar is formed.  Here we list the most common ones:

  • Flat Scars: The classic pink/reddish, slightly raised lesion. These scars usually flatten and lighten over time.
  • Hypoertrophic scars: These are raised from the skin initially, but over months or years will usually flatten.
  • Atrophic scars: These scars sit lower than skin level and usually occur on the face (especially after severe acne).
  • Keloid Scars: These scars are raised and significantly larger than the initial wound that caused them. They usually appear well after the injury and do not resolve without intervention.
  • Contracture Scars: These form most often after severe burns. They cause the skin to thicken and tighten becoming resistant to stretching, which can impact the range of motion of the area.
  • Stretch Marks: Most often associated with pregnancy, stretch marks  can form with any rapid changes in size. Puberty, weight loss, and bodybuilding can cause these marks.
